South Luangwa National Park - Zambia

Magic of Zambia’s South Luangwa

South Luangwa National Park presents a safari experience like no other. Spanning over 9,000 square kilometres in the east of Zambia, this iconic park captivates the soul with its incredible wildlife and as the pioneer of walking safaris in Africa.

If you are a golfer looking for another dimension to your African trip, here is why you should add South Luangwa to your safari bucket list.

Exceptional Wildlife Encounters

With one of the highest densities of leopards in Africa, South Luangwa is often called the “Valley of the Leopard”. The park’s biodiversity however doesn’t end there as it is also home to species like lions, wild dogs, elephants, zebras and the beautiful Thornicroft giraffe. The Luangwa River is a lifeline and offers great sightings of crocodiles, hippos and thirsty game gathering along its banks. The birdlife is equally impressive with over 400 recorded species. The colourful carmine bee-eaters are a sight to behold as they gather on masse.

Legendary Walking Safaris

South Luangwa is considered the birthplace of the walking safari, a unique experience that sets it apart from other parks. Unlike game drives, walking safaris offer a quieter and more intimate connection with nature. Led by expert guides and armed scouts, it allows one to explore the bush on foot with up-close wildlife encounters. Feel the thrill of tracking lions, observing elephants from a safe distance and discovering smaller wonders like colourful insects.

Unique Night Safaris

One of the highlights of South Luangwa is the opportunity to go on night safaris, an experience offered by few other parks in Africa. After sunset, the bush comes alive with nocturnal creatures. Spot leopards on the hunt, hyenas patrolling their territory and civets darting through the grass. The guides use spotlights to reveal the reflective eyes of animals, adding an element of mystery to the adventure.

Best Time to Visit South Luangwa

The best time to visit South Luangwa depends on what you want to experience. The dry season between May and October is ideal for wildlife viewing. As water sources shrink, animals gather around the Luangwa River, making them easier to spot. This period also offers clear skies and cooler temperatures, perfect for safaris. During the wet season between November and April, the park is transformed into a green wonderland and is the best time for birdwatching. However, some roads may become inaccessible and certain lodges close during this period.

Africa Golf Safari offers various golf itineraries to Zambia. The Ultimate Luxury Zambian Golf Safari (15 days) includes four rounds of golf and a safari to South Luangwa. The Zambia and South Africa Golf Safari (18 days) includes eight rounds of golf and stops at Victoria Falls and South Luangwa.
