Fancourt Golf Resort isn’t just a destination, it is an experience that combines the best of South African golf with incredible natural beauty and luxurious amenities. Situated on the stunning Garden Route along the country’s Indian Ocean coastline, its trio of top-tier courses offers something for everyone. The Gary Player-designed layouts of The Links, Montagu and Outeniqua once again underline why South Africa is a world-class golfing destination.
Africa Golf Safari breaks down the three courses at Fancourt.
The Links
The Links is Fancourt’s crown jewel, ranked second in South Africa and among the top golf courses worldwide. Scotland’s traditional links courses were the inspiration for this masterpiece. It was crafted from a flat, sandy landscape and transformed into a rugged, windswept terrain. Player himself considers it his greatest design accomplishment. It has hosted prestigious tournaments like the Presidents Cup and the SA Open, the world’s second-oldest national Open Championship. The par 4 10th, aptly named Kilimanjaro, presents a rare challenge. It is set high atop the dunes and requires precision and strategy.
Outeniqua
Outeniqua, named after the majestic mountain range framing the resort, is a more forgiving layout. It is perfect for players of varying abilities. However, it still offers strategic challenges that reward thoughtful play. The course is designed to highlight the surrounding beauty. Water features and wide fairways enhance the experience. The 11th is regarded as one of South Africa’s finest par 5s. It features a winding stream flowing along the fairway that leads to a water hazard left of the green. Any ball that veers off the green in that direction will roll down the slope and into the water.
Montagu
Montagu is a parkland masterpiece that combines scenic beauty with strategic golf. Designed Player and revamped by David McLay Kidd (2005), it offers pristine fairways and superb greens. It is a beloved choice for serious golfers. The par 3 17th presents a bold challenge. Water along the front edge makes this hole feel intimidating. The large green and well-positioned bunkers however provide room for a safer approach. The par 5 18th is considered one of the most thrilling finishers in golf. A well-executed layup is essential for a clean strike that can make or break your final hole.
